Day 5 to Baños de Montemayor

Canaveral is like all the small towns we have been in in that everything is shuttered up. The Casa is very nice, an original old house. Our room has a patio which is cut out of the roof. The view is nice.

We are very close to the bell tower which seems to ring every 15 minutes so we hope it stops for the night.

It is interesting though in that there are no staff here. We had to phone to be let in and a guy came to check us in. He told us that when we were leaving to open the window so we could put the keys in through the window!. The only ‘restaurant’ in town was the Hostal Malaga which opened for dinner at 8:30.
The good news was we met the Italian couple, Mariano and Anna, whom we met on the morning of day 2 and who are keeping the same schedule as us.
We sat together for dinner and had an enjoyable time, which was good as dinner was awful!
The menu was a few handwritten items on a piece of paper. We all ordered te theme thing which turned out to be pork belly stew and much more fat than meat. Poor John didn’t eat any of the pork. I was so hungry I ate the whole thing.

This morning started out with a long slow climb out of the village followed by the most wonderful long slow descent. It was a cool misty morning so freewheeling down a long hill with a cool breeze in your face is as close to heaven as it gets on the Camino!

Our peace was suddenly interrupted by a wild boar that decided to jump out from the left, rush across in front of us and disappear into the bush on the other side.

Again, because of farmer restrictions and path condiions most of today was by road. Also the weather held off so it was a relatively easy ride.
AT about 20km before Aldeanueva del Camino we took a short detour to visit the Roman ruins of Caparra, a highlight of this Camino.
On the way there we passed picturesque fields of beautiful olive trees.

These trees were laden down with olives

Beyond here we came to the Roman ruins including the famous Arch of Caparra

We did a walking tour of the ruins which are quite extensive

From there it was Onward to today’s destination. As we got closer we can see foothills  beckoning us in the distance

We enter Baños de Montemayor after 87km. This town sits at the bottom of a very high hill. Unlike other small towns there are signs for  lots of hotels, except for ours. We search for it and finally ask in another hotel to be told that it is way up the hill via a winding, climbing road. Trust me to book the only hotel at the top of the hill.
It gets worse, since we can’t get breakfast until 8:30, we decide to ride back down to town to pick up supplies, which of course means riding back up!!
A typical small Spanish town, it took quite a bit of exploring to actually find a small store that sold food but we did and are all set for an early morning departure!
I am sitting in the hotel trying to upload this but we are in middle of thunder, lightening and rain and the Internet is down. Hope it comes back.

  1. Well done Dermot! Next time, however, you should come here and bike through Italy… more tiring perhaps, but you’ll definitely eat better! 🙂

  2. Again well done and wonderful photos – I’m getting worried for you having to cope with the poor food when you should be eating better for energy – you will have more than rest to catch up with when you reach Salamanca. Hoping your tucking in to a ‘good feed’ now. Best of good luck for tomorrow. Cheers Ellen

  3. Beautiful photos, I particularly like the olive grove. It sounds like it was a long day and you must be looking forward to your day off in Salamanca. Trip Advisor has reviews of 350 restaurants in Salamanca, so that bodes well.

  4. Delighted to hear you had a good meal this evening. Roll on Salamanca. Long late breakfast, lazy lunch and choice of restaurants for the evening. All the best for tomorrow.

  5. Well guys, you are amazing. I’m delighted that the rains were kind to you again today. Is it that your are more familiar and confident with the journey? It would seem that it’s not as dauntings or difficult as day 1 or 2, your blog today would appear that you had more time to enjoy yourselves and the surroundings. Pictures are amazing as usual, thank you for sharing them. Some of those with the olive trees would remind one of photos of plains in Africa. I understand the problems with the restaurents in the little villages, they show you a menu and when you have decided what to order they’ll only have one item available. The pork belly stew sounds most unappetizing, I couldn’t blame you not eating it John. Rest well and I hope you managed to get nourishing food for tomorrows journey. Take care and thanks again for the blogs and photo’s, I look forwarding each evening to see how you are getting on.

  6. Freewheeling down the long hill sounds great. You will really deserve your rest day on Saturday. The boar who ran out in front of you today was lucky, Remember the boar on the hotel wall on your first night!

  7. Personally, I am disappointed that the two of you did not set off in hot pursuit of the boar – I would have liked the head for our living room wall. Today sounded good. It was nice that you took the time to see the ruins and I love all the photos. Roll on Salamanca!

  8. Looking at your elevation chart for day 5 the climb looked daunting but your description sounds like it was a walk in the park. Well done.

  9. I think you should supplement your diet with wild boar
You are amazing–great riders! I’m so impressed that with all the riding and so little fuel you’re still taking the chance to see these great sites along the way. The pictures are always beautiful.
I think you have an army of followers counting down to rest day 🙂
